Drink and Draw (not necessarily in that order)

This past summer I had the most enjoyable opportunity to present a workshop at the 4th International Urban Sketchers symposium in Barcelona. It was a fabulous three day event, full of people from all over the world who love to draw on location. Besides the fact that the energy was high and the drawings were flying, Barcelona is one of my favorite cities, and I had the chance to catch up with some friends who live there.

There is a tradition in these symposiums called “drink and draw” – essentially you all get together at a local pub, have a drink or two, and draw each other. I haven’t done anything like that since college (maybe not even then?) and it was a lot of fun to give in to my inner art nerd. Sitting around drawing each other drawing other pictures of each other – and the trick is in the proportions. Of drawing to drinking, that is. The picture above shows Cesar drawing Lapin who is drawing Isabel. And that’s my stepdaughter Ashley at left, checking her i-phone. Even Ash did a little drawing, and she was pretty good! We went out to dinner later (the Spanish eat at 11 pm) and at one point after the meal, all the French people in the group stood up and sang the national anthem of France, since it happened to be Bastille Day. All in all, a fun evening!
