Drawing on Fabric

For a long time, I have made drawings and illustrations not only on paper, but also on fabric. I love to silkscreen and paint directly on fabric, and ‘art to wear’ is a realm I am very happy playing in. Recently, my Whale Song Coat kimono was shortlisted for the AOI World Illustration Awards, and I am so honored! Above is a sample of some of the fabric details. The imagery on the kimono is a palimpsest of hand drawings, 19th century navigational maps, and gps trackings of humpback whale migrations. The idea is to show how human migration has followed whale migration, from the dawn of whaling right through the industrial revolution. And to commemorate the 38th Voyage of the Charles W. Morgan whaling ship, made in 2014 to bring attention to whale and ocean conservation.

So happy about this. You can see more images of the kimono on my home blog, HERE.
